The British Potato Council wanted a themed attraction at the centre of the national pavilion Elliott designed for them at the World Potato Congress at Emmeloord in Holland. Together we chose to produce a British Pub serving baked potatoes beer.

The major obstacle was that we were not allowed to compete with the official food vendor by either selling or giving away the food and drink. The solution was simple, we produced a large number of “banknotes”.

These were distributed to all the contributors on the pavilion. For every visitor they could give away two of these vouchers, which could then be exchanged for beer and a baked potato at the pub. It was great fun re creating the pub, we sold John Smiths and Boddingtons, we served soft drinks and baked potatoes with a wide variety of fillings. So successful was the event that we had to re stock the supplies after only half a day and the attraction continued to draw visitors for the whole three-day event.

We piggy backed the theme of the bank note and the pub by calling the pub “The Jacket and Spud” and the cartoon character Elliott created for the note became the theme for the event and the entire pavilion.
